Futurescapes Academy is for thsoe who are serious about their craft, about contributing to a community of writers, and about supporting writers in financial need. The goal is for us to fill the scholarship fund before the next annual workshop so that we can give more need and diversity-based scholarships. It’s worth it to us to offer discounted rates, if it means we can fill our scholarship fund in advance.

Futurescapes generally relies on the sale of classes to fill our scholarship fund. However, with rising inflation we experienced two things: 1) fewer students purchased add-on classes; 2) as a result we were left with a thin scholarship pool. We could raise tuition, but we’re dedicated to keeping tuition where it is for as long as we can. To solve this problem we created the academy as a way to offer the same benefits at a discounted rate and allow students to pay in monthly installments instead of all at once. Futurescapes benefits from knowing beforehand that our scholarship fund is filled, and students get another relief from the pressures of inflation.

Academy Recruit and Commander are open for registration throughout the year, so you can join whenever you’re ready. Ambassador enrollment opens each October and is limited to five writers.

Academy content is hosted through Teachable. After registering, you’ll be able to log in to access the resources and benefits included with your membership. Community conversation takes place in our private Academy Discord.

Commander and Ambassador members receive a new Academy Learning module each month. Modules cover topics related to craft, revision, publishing, and the writing life.

Quarterly benefits provide Commander and Ambassador members with additional resources, programming, or opportunities throughout the year. Specific benefits will be announced as they become available.

Commander and Ambassador members receive 10% off eligible 2027 Futurescapes workshops. Information about eligible programs and how to access your Academy pricing will be provided through your membership.

Ambassador membership includes admission to the 2027 Futurescapes 100-Page Workshop. Ambassadors must complete their 12-month membership commitment and meet workshop participation requirements to receive their included admission. Dates, manuscript requirements, deadlines, and other workshop information will be provided well in advance.

Yes! Academy members may change membership levels, subject to the enrollment requirements and timing restrictions of each tier.

Recruit and Commander members may upgrade or downgrade between those levels throughout the year. Ambassador enrollment is only available during the designated October enrollment period and is limited to five members, so upgrades to Ambassador are only available during that window and while space remains.

If you move to a different membership level, your access and benefits will update to reflect your new tier.

Recruit and Commander memberships may be canceled at any time. Your membership and benefits will remain active through the end of your current billing period, after which you will lose access to the Academy content and benefits associated with your membership. Previous membership payments are nonrefundable.

Ambassador is a 12-month commitment because membership includes admission to the 2027 Futurescapes 100-Page Workshop. Ambassador payments are nonrefundable, and members must complete the full 12-month membership commitment to receive their included workshop admission.

Canceling or otherwise ending an Ambassador membership before completing the required 12 months forfeits the included 100-Page Workshop admission and any remaining Ambassador benefits. Payments already made cannot be applied as partial payment toward separate registration for the workshop.
