Things to Do in Florence

Florence is a city that lives and breathes art, history, and beauty. When you’re not immersed in your writing, take time to explore its unforgettable sights, hidden gems, and culinary delights:

Must-See Landmarks

  • The Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore): Climb to the top of Brunelleschi’s Dome for panoramic views of the city, or admire the architecture from the Piazza del Duomo.

  • Uffizi Gallery: Home to iconic works by Botticelli, da Vinci, Caravaggio, and Michelangelo. Be sure to book tickets in advance!

  • Galleria dell’Accademia: Visit the famous statue of David by Michelangelo and explore Renaissance masterpieces.

  • Ponte Vecchio: Wander across Florence’s most iconic bridge, lined with historic goldsmith shops and picturesque river views.

  • Palazzo Pitti & Boboli Gardens: Tour this former Medici residence and explore the sprawling gardens behind it—perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Neighborhood Gems

  • Oltrarno District: Known for artisan workshops, authentic cafes, and quieter streets. Great for strolling, sketching, or journaling.

  • Mercato Centrale: A must-visit food hall where you can try everything from Tuscan truffle sandwiches to handmade pasta.

  • Santa Croce: Explore the beautiful basilica and the tombs of Italian legends like Michelangelo and Galileo.

Florentine Food & Drink

  • Grab an espresso at a local bar and sip like a local (standing at the counter).

  • Try bistecca alla fiorentina, a Tuscan-style steak perfect for sharing.

  • Cool down with some of the city’s best gelato at La Carraia, Gelateria dei Neri, or Perché No!

  • Don’t forget an aperitivo—small bites and drinks, usually around 6–8 PM, found at many bars and cafes.

Travel Tips

Traveling to Italy, especially during a busy year like Jubilee 2025, takes a little planning—but it’s absolutely worth it! Here’s what you need to know:

Before You Go:

  • Passports & Visas: U.S. and Canadian citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months past your travel date.

  • Jubilee Year Considerations:

    • While the Jubilee is centered in Rome, expect increased tourism across Italy. Book flights and lodging early.

    • Allow extra time at airports and popular landmarks.

    • Consider arriving a day early or staying a day later to avoid crowds and enjoy a more relaxed travel pace.

  • Travel Insurance: Highly recommended in case of delays, cancellations, or medical emergencies.

Flights & Trains:

  • Fly into: Florence Airport (FLR) is closest, or Pisa International Airport (PSA) for additional options. Rome and Milan are alternatives if you plan to travel by train.

  • Train Travel: Florence’s Santa Maria Novella station is the city’s main rail hub. It’s a short walk or taxi ride to Residence La Contessina.

  • Book train tickets through Trenitalia or Italo and reserve seats in advance for intercity routes.

Money & Communication:

  • Currency: Euro (€). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s good to carry some cash for cafes, markets, and taxis.

  • Tipping: Not required, but rounding up or leaving small change is appreciated.

  • Phone & Data: Consider an international plan or an Italian SIM card (available at the airport or city shops).

  • Time Zone: Florence operates on Central European Time (CET), which is 6 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time.

Packing Tips:

  • Bring comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestone streets.

  • Dress in layers—May weather in Florence is typically mild (60s-70s°F), but evenings can be cool.

  • Bring a refillable water bottle—Florence has many clean public fountains.

  • Power outlets are Type C, E, or F—bring a European power adapter for your devices.

FAQs

  • Our standard rooms are for single attendees sharing with another writer. If you'd like to bring a spouse or guest, we can arrange for a room upgrade (additional fees apply).

  • Amerigo Vespucci Airport is 7 km from the city center. However, most people fly into either Rome or Venice and take the train to Florence (and it lets you see the Italian countryside along the way!).

  • As with many organizations, the time has come to address AI.

Futurescapes works to ensure that the intellectual property of each applicant and participant is respected and protected. We will not use any material submitted to the workshop for any commercial or public purpose. Should we seek to use an excerpt of a student or applicant's work, we will only do so with prior consent. We will also always provide just compensation at competitive market rates.

Generative AI technologies, which can generate creative materials due to their incorporation of innumerable literary and creative works into their predictive software - generally without consent - pose a serious challenge to the protection and creation of original intellectual property. As such, it is prohibited for any staff, student, applicant, faculty member or any other individual affiliated with Futurescapes, to utilize generative AI in the course of creating material for a Futurescapes workshop or program or in generating feedback on the creative materials of a participant of a workshop or Futurescapes-affiliated program.

    Two exceptions exist:

    1. AI-generated material created as part of student's creative work may be acceptable if it is clearly labeled. The following schema is required for material directly derived from AI-generation (direct quote or paraphrased material) [This Material was generated with the help of AI] content [Close of AI-Generated Material]. For other uses of AI in your creative work, it is reasonable to provide an italicized explanation and justification at the top of the creative work.

    2. Feedback provided to another student or participant may utilize ai-generated material if express prior consent is received in writing from the student for whom feedback is to be generated.

Above all, faculty, staff, students and any party affiliated with the workshop will operate out of respect for the intellectual property of others and in full honesty and transparency regarding their own creative work. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the workshop, or any affiliated program, without refund of tuition or fees.

  • Here are a few things we’ve learned over the years:

    • Come prepared. Read the submissions of your group members, prep your feedback, and be prepared with questions on your own submission.

    • Interact with other participants. One of the best parts of Futurescapes is the community. Jump on the Discord, connect with each other on social media, and enjoy having other writers around. Whether it’s your cohort or other workshop participants as well, now is the time to make lifelong friends.

    • Ask the questions. If you have a question, ask it. There will be multiple Q&A sessions for you to ask those pressing questions.

    • Be present. We know it can be hard to fully focus on anything with all the things we have going on in our life, but try to give all the attention

    • Take time to reflect. After your sessions, take time to reflect on the feedback you receive before the next day. Whether that’s right after your session, or later that night, reflect on the feedback. It may help jostle lose an extra question or start your brain churning on a new idea.

Join whenever you can. There are social events and Q&A sessions that are optional. If you have the time, hop on whatever you can. It’s a great way to learn and meet others.
